Merson hints that Arteta might leave out an Arsenal key player in the upcoming clash against Newcastle.

Paul Merson has voiced his admiration for Eberechi Eze, suggesting he would like the forward to start in Arsenal’s upcoming Premier League clash with Newcastle United. Despite this, he admitted he expects Gabriel Martinelli to be the one selected instead.

 

Since his arrival at the Emirates, Eze has settled in quickly, making an immediate impression by netting his first goal for the Gunners against Port Vale. His creativity and attacking spark have added a fresh edge to Mikel Arteta’s squad. However, Arsenal’s depth means competition for starting spots remains fierce. Martinelli, often introduced from the bench, has consistently performed well and shown his value to the team.

 

Merson’s attacking preference

Arteta faces a welcome dilemma as he looks to rotate effectively while still securing results. Speaking to Sportskeeda, Merson explained his ideal front three would be Bukayo Saka, Eze, and Viktor Gyokeres. Still, he admitted: “I don’t think Arteta will do that. I have a feeling Martinelli will start instead of Eze. He’s reliable, disciplined, and his pace is always an asset. But Eze has that X-factor—he can open up defences, as he proved against Manchester City.”

 

Merson’s comments underline the differences between the two players. Martinelli contributes energy, work rate, and speed, while Eze provides vision and unpredictability, able to change the game with one moment of brilliance.

 

Arsenal’s attacking depth

The return of Martin Ødegaard makes Arteta’s decision even tougher, as his presence boosts Arsenal’s creativity but reduces the chances of both Eze and Martinelli starting together. This depth, however, is an advantage, ensuring constant competition and tactical variety for different opponents.

 

Regardless of who starts against Newcastle, the focus will be on maintaining Arsenal’s strong league momentum. Both Eze and Martinelli are expected to play pivotal roles throughout the season, even if only one gets the nod this weekend.
