‘IF I WERE MANAGER, HE WOULDN’T EVEN SIT ON THE BENCH’: ROONEY FIRES SCATHING ATTACK ON UNITED REGULAR
Carrington— Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has pulled no punches in a furious assessment of the club’s current attacking setup, unleashing a scathing rant against an unnamed Carrington regular whose selfish play style he claims is single-handedly crippling the team’s offensive rhythm.
Speaking on a live episode of the podcast Stick to United, Rooney’s frustration boiled over as he dissected the tactical flaws that continue to handicap the Red Devils’ forward line this season. The club’s all-time record goalscorer delivered a brutal, unvarnished verdict on the player’s output, arguing that individual vanity has eclipsed team discipline at Old Trafford.
> “I watch him play every week and it drives me crazy,” Rooney declared, visibly agitated during the broadcast. “He takes four touches when he should take one, he ignores overlapping runs, and he plays for his own individual highlights rather than the team scoreline. If I were the manager, I wouldn’t even let him sit on the bench this weekend. He needs a massive reality check.”

A Breakdown in Fluidity
Rooney’s explosive comments hit on a growing tactical discussion surrounding the squad’s transition play. During his own decorated career at Old Trafford, Rooney was renowned not just for his goalscoring prowess, but for his selfless work rate, quick decision-making, and ability to elevate the players around him.
According to United’s iconic former captain, the current dynamic on the pitch represents the exact opposite of those principles:
* Over-handling the Ball: Slowing down quick transitions by holding onto possession, allowing opposition defensive blocks to reset.
* Ignoring Support: Refusing to utilize overlapping full-backs or decoys, effectively killing width and isolation plays.
* Highlight-Chasing: Prioritizing low-percentage shots and individual skill moves over high-percentage passing options in the penalty area.
Pressure Mounts at Old Trafford
Rooney’s scathing assessment comes at a crucial juncture for Manchester United, as managerial pressure and squad scrutiny continue to reach a fever pitch. With performances drawing consistent criticism from former players and pundits alike, calling for a star player to be dropped entirely from the matchday squad sets a fiery backdrop heading into the weekend.
Whether the management heeds Rooney’s advice and drops the attacker to send a message remains to be seen, but the legend’s words have certainly set social media ablaze and placed a harsh spotlight on Carrington this week.
