Real Madrid have reportedly decided to step back, allowing one of their transfer targets to join Liverpool without resistance — giving the Reds a major advantage in yet another transfer battle.

Over the past several years, Liverpool and Real Madrid have repeatedly clashed in the transfer market, with Los Blancos typically coming out on top. Many of Madrid’s current stars — including Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo, Endrick, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Eduardo Camavinga, and Dean Huijsen — were all once on Liverpool’s radar.

Now, it appears the rivalry may continue into 2026. Liverpool are eager to extend Ibrahima Konaté’s contract, while Real Madrid have been monitoring the defender as a potential free transfer target. However, one defender who won’t be heading to the Bernabéu is Marc Guehi.

According to AS, Real Madrid have ended their pursuit of the Crystal Palace star, reportedly due to financial reasons — they are unwilling to meet his wage demands. Yet, the real reason may be that Guehi has already set his sights on Liverpool, with Bayern Munich being the only other major contender for his signature.

While Bayern can officially negotiate with Guehi from January 1st — as he’ll enter the final six months of his contract — Liverpool are still believed to be in pole position. The Reds may even move early to secure his services in the winter window, especially following Giovanni Leoni’s injury.

With Real Madrid out of the race, Liverpool now hold a commanding position to bring Guehi to Anfield — and all signs suggest they plan to capitalize on it.
