How Chelsea ruined Victor Osimhen deal after coming ‘very close’ to landing him last summer

Chelsea appeared to be on the verge of securing Victor Osimhen’s signature last summer, yet despite coming incredibly close, the deal ultimately collapsed. The club had reached a compromise with Osimhen on personal terms, and all that remained were final details, including medical checks and paperwork. However, time ran out, preventing the transfer from being finalized. According to John Obi Mikel, who had insights into the negotiations, both Chelsea and Osimhen were eager to complete the move, and there remains a possibility of rekindling talks in the future.

The biggest roadblock, however, seemed to be financial. Chelsea withdrew from the race for Osimhen largely due to his high salary demands and a release clause that ranged from €75-120 million, depending on Napoli’s willingness to negotiate. This steep price tag discouraged not only Chelsea but also Paris Saint-Germain, leaving Manchester United and Saudi clubs as some of the last contenders for his signature.

Additionally, a journalist close to Osimhen claimed that while Napoli frustrated many clubs interested in the striker, Chelsea had a clear path to sign him but ultimately “messed up” the deal. The breakdown of negotiations left Chelsea short on top-class strikers for the current season, a move that could prove costly as they struggle in front of goal.

Despite the missed opportunity, the door is not entirely closed. With the summer transfer window approaching, Chelsea may revisit their interest in Osimhen if they can find a way to meet his financial expectations and complete the deal smoothly.
