Rio Ferdinand Backs Mason Mount for a Key Role Under Amorim at United

Club legend Rio Ferdinand has encouraged Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim to hand Mason Mount a consistent role in the starting lineup.

Mount, who has struggled with multiple injuries since arriving at Old Trafford, is being tipped by Ferdinand to make a fresh impact this season. The former United defender believes the England midfielder has the potential to feel “like a new signing” if given the chance to prove himself.

“When fit, he’s always been trusted — we saw it at Chelsea when he was pivotal during their Champions League win. He’s got the work rate, technical ability, and energy to be a top player,” Ferdinand noted.

Mount’s time at United so far has been plagued by fitness issues. Since making a £55 million move from Chelsea in 2023, he has managed only a handful of starts. In his debut season, he featured in just five league matches due to hamstring and calf problems. The following campaign wasn’t much kinder, with Mount missing 23 games due to injury. However, he ended the 2024/25 season strongly, featuring in nine straight league fixtures.

Heading into the new campaign, questions remain about Mount’s durability and where exactly he fits into Amorim’s plans. With new arrivals like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo expected to occupy attacking roles, Mount could face stiff competition for a starting spot.

In midfield, captain Bruno Fernandes and young star Kobbie Mainoo appear to be ahead in the pecking order. If everyone stays fit, Mount might have to settle for a squad role — at least for now.
