Paul Scholes Questions Ruben Amorim’s Decisions but Stops Short of Calling His Appointment a Mistake

Paul Scholes believes Manchester United were not necessarily wrong to appoint Ruben Amorim, but he suspects the manager may already be feeling overwhelmed just months into the job.

Amorim took charge during the November international break after leaving Sporting Lisbon, yet his arrival has not sparked the turnaround United fans had hoped for. The club currently sits 13th in the Premier League, and results remain disappointing.

Implementing his signature 3-4-3 formation, which brought him success in Portugal, has proven difficult due to the squad he inherited. Many players do not naturally fit into the system, forcing Amorim to make compromises. Despite warning of challenges ahead, the 40-year-old will be eager to reshape the squad when the transfer window reopens.

For now, however, United need results, and some of Amorim’s decisions are raising eyebrows. Last Friday, he opted to play new signing Patrick Dorgu as a right wing-back rather than his natural left-sided role, a move that left Scholes questioning the manager’s thought process.

“I’m not saying appointing him was the wrong decision because he inherited a difficult situation, but the league form and performances are concerning,” Scholes said.

He continued: “We’ve been desperate for a left wing-back. They sign one in Dorgu, yet he plays him on the right while keeping Dalot on the left. That tells me Amorim is a little bit lost right now.”

Scholes also highlighted United’s lack of a solid core, calling for reinforcements in key areas. “They need a spine—goalkeeper, centre-backs, midfielders, and strikers. If they don’t fix that, they could find themselves in real trouble.”

While United made a couple of young signings in January, Amorim will be hoping for significant backing from Ineos in the summer to reshape the squad in his image. Scholes’ remarks came during a discussion on The Overlap, where he expressed concerns about the club’s direction if the right changes aren’t made.
