Ex-Chelsea defender William Gallas has criticized the club for what he believes was a poor decision in signing goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

Despite showing promise at Brighton, the Spanish shot-stopper has struggled to establish himself as Chelsea’s first-choice keeper. Gallas is convinced that Sanchez has already demonstrated he lacks the quality required to play at the highest level for a club like Chelsea, calling out the directors for their recruitment misstep.

While there’s still a chance for Sanchez to turn things around, Gallas appears to have lost faith in his ability to do so. Many Chelsea supporters likely share the same view, especially after Enzo Maresca opted to drop Sanchez for the recent match against West Ham.

Speaking to Prime Casino, as cited by the Metro, Gallas said:

“Unfortunately for Robert Sanchez, he makes too many costly mistakes. It’s easy to blame the player, but Chelsea fans should also hold the sporting director accountable, as well as those responsible for his signing.

“He doesn’t have the level required to be Chelsea’s number one. At a club of this stature, you need to meet a certain standard, and sadly, he doesn’t.

“The people making these recruitment decisions should have known better. Typically, it’s not just the sporting director; someone overseeing the goalkeepers must have signed off on the move. That person made a mistake bringing Sanchez in.”

Chelsea has a history of world-class goalkeepers, and finding their next Petr Čech or Thibaut Courtois will be a top priority—though easier said than done.
