A previously overlooked signing made during Todd Boehly’s tenure is now being considered for a place in Chelsea’s squad next season, despite never having featured for the club before.

Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea squad for the 2025/26 campaign is beginning to take shape, following several early summer signings. Big-money arrivals like Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, and Jamie Gittens are all expected to be part of the first-team setup at Stamford Bridge.

 

Many fans are eager to see Andrey Santos get more playing time, especially after limited chances during the Club World Cup. However, Maresca feels the midfielder still needs time to fully adjust to his tactical demands.

 

Chelsea now face a vacancy in the third-choice goalkeeper role, with Marcus Bettinelli making a switch to Manchester City. His departure included a subtle criticism of Todd Boehly’s squad strategy, and it’s uncertain whether Chelsea will seek an experienced replacement.

 

Instead, they might opt to promote youth, with Gabriel Slonina—a signing made early in Boehly’s ownership—reportedly being considered. Slonina spent last season at Barnsley but was sidelined early due to a finger injury. Despite never featuring in a Chelsea match, The Athletic notes he’s being evaluated for a spot as the third-choice keeper next season.

 

There’s still no firm decision on who will be the club’s number one, with doubts surrounding Robert Sanchez’s consistency in goal.

 

Slonina won’t be without competition. Belgian prospect Mike Penders is also in contention. Although the club had initially planned to send him out on loan, those plans might be reconsidered due to concerns about his long-term commitment if not integrated early. He’s currently training with the senior squad at the Club World Cup.

 

With Maresca’s system taking root and new names entering the frame, Chelsea’s goalkeeping lineup could soon feature two young talents fighting for a place in the 2025/26 squad.
