Recently, Mikel has turned his attention once again to Chelsea, offering some thought-provoking comments. He claimed that, in his prime, he would outperform any of the club’s current midfielders. The 38-year-old also believes the time has come for the Blues to part ways with one of their high-profile players following a difficult season in west London.

Several expensive acquisitions at Chelsea have failed to deliver since the club’s ownership changed hands — Christopher Nkunku among them.

Nkunku is now being linked with a potential exit, with clubs like Juventus reportedly interested. Mikel supports the idea, stating in an interview with GiveMeSport that the player has struggled with injuries and looks uncomfortable playing out of position. He stressed that Nkunku is a natural No.10, not a striker, and with Cole Palmer excelling in that role, there’s little room for him in the starting lineup.

Mikel said:

“It’s the right moment to sell Nkunku, recoup some funds, and reinvest in a wide attacker. Bringing in another striker isn’t the answer — three senior strikers vying for one spot just doesn’t make sense.”

Last season, Nkunku scored 14 goals in 42 games, with most of his contributions coming outside of league play. He only started nine Premier League matches under Enzo Maresca, highlighting his limited role. Despite his versatility to play as a striker, his preferred position behind the forward line complicates his future — especially after Liam Delap’s arrival.
