The situation worsened on Saturday when Victor Lindelof exited Sweden’s match against Slovakia in the 26th minute, seemingly due to a potential hamstring injury. Lindelof had been playing as the right centre-back in Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 system.

 

With limited defensive options available, Amorim may have to experiment by deploying Casemiro in an unconventional defensive role to cover the gaps in the backline.

Casemiro could be utilized as either the right-sided centre-back or the central figure in a back three. Under Ruben Amorim’s system, which transitions into a 4-2-2-2 shape during buildup play, the central centre-back often steps into midfield to create better passing angles. Casemiro’s skill set makes him a natural fit for this role.
