“The performance of Sporting yesterday clearly shows that you are the man for the job but if you want to remain consistent at Old Trafford, you need one more thing and this was exactly what Erik Ten Hag lacked during his time” – Cristiano Ronaldo has shared a significant piece of advice with Ruben Amorim as he prepares to take on the role at Manchester United. Cristiano Ronaldo has advised incoming Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim not to downplay expectations at the club.

Amorim, set to take over on November 11, inherits a squad eager for success following a lackluster period under Erik ten Hag, which only saw a highlight in their FA Cup victory over Manchester City in May. Ronaldo, a former Real Madrid and United star, emphasized that Amorim must aim for the top from the start.

Ronaldo had previously clashed with Ten Hag, particularly over the manager’s remarks downplaying United’s competitive chances in the Premier League and Champions League.

Ronaldo, who departed United after a contentious interview with Piers Morgan, insisted on the necessity of a winning mentality at Old Trafford. He argued that United’s manager should always set out to win, stating, “Maybe we don’t have that potential, but you cannot say that. We’re going to try.”

Under Ten Hag, Ronaldo’s frustrations peaked when he was disciplined for refusing to enter as a substitute against Tottenham in October 2022. Some teammates supported the disciplinary action, while others felt Ten Hag was too harsh, even barring Ronaldo from the dressing room.

Since then, Ronaldo’s relationship with Amorim appears much stronger. Unlike his strained rapport with Ten Hag, Ronaldo respects Amorim, whom he has reportedly nicknamed “the poet” for his thoughtful communication style with media and players alike.
