Reporting live from Stamford Bridge, Jamie Carragher has called on Chelsea to bring in a new goalkeeper after Robert Sanchez’s display against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon. Carragher stated, “Chelsea needs to seriously think about signing a new goalkeeper. There’s something off with Sanchez; whenever the team needs him to deliver, he falls apart. It’s incredibly frustrating—he completely ruined the game for Chelsea yesterday.” Carragher emphasized that the club should replace the “fearful” goalkeeper.

Jamie Carragher has urged Chelsea to reconsider their goalkeeper situation following Robert Sanchez’s disappointing performance in the 2-1 loss to Liverpool on Sunday.

Despite being reinstated as the first-choice goalkeeper by Enzo Maresca, Sanchez’s inconsistent form this season has raised concerns about Chelsea’s ability to compete at the top level of the Premier League.

 

Although Sanchez showed glimpses of promise, such as in the 1-0 victory over Bournemouth in September, his performances have been marred by errors, especially when playing out from the back.

Carragher criticized him as “scared of the ball” after the match at Anfield, where the Spanish goalkeeper struggled under pressure.

 

Carragher highlighted Sanchez’s shortcomings, noting that while he couldn’t have done much to stop Mohamed Salah’s penalty, he should have reacted better to prevent Curtis Jones’ goal.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Carragher said, “Chelsea had more control of the game, but the goalkeeper let them down. If they want to compete at the top, they need a new goalkeeper.”

 

Sanchez’s struggles were evident at Anfield, with mistakes in crucial moments, including a reckless challenge on Curtis Jones that initially led to a penalty before being overturned by VAR.

Carragher was especially critical of Sanchez’s hesitant approach in dealing with Jones’ goal, contrasting it with the aggressive style of legendary goalkeepers like Peter Schmeichel.

 

The situation has intensified Chelsea’s search for a reliable goalkeeper. Despite significant investments since 2022, the club has yet to find a long-term solution between the posts.

The upcoming addition of young talent Mike Penders next summer may challenge Sanchez for the starting spot, but speculation is growing that Chelsea could seek an immediate upgrade in the January transfer window.
