Virgil van Dijk’s contract duration and salary disclosed as Liverpool captain shares thoughts following new deal signing.

Liverpool have officially announced that Virgil van Dijk has signed a new contract extension, just under a week after Mohamed Salah also committed his future to the club. The Dutch defender, who was initially set to become a free agent at the end of the season, had recently hinted that contract negotiations were progressing positively.

 

Remaining at Anfield was always Van Dijk’s goal. Since joining from Southampton in January 2018, he has evolved into one of the Premier League’s most outstanding centre-backs. With the new deal now confirmed, all doubts regarding his future have been put to rest. In his first interview after re-signing, the 33-year-old captain expressed his unwavering loyalty to the Reds.

 

“I’m extremely happy and proud,” Van Dijk told Liverpool’s official media. “It’s hard to describe the emotions I’m feeling right now. Being able to extend my journey with Liverpool for another two years is truly special. This club was always where I wanted to be—it was never a question in my mind.”

 

He continued, “Liverpool has become a part of me. Someone recently referred to me as an ‘adopted Scouser’—and that’s something I’m very proud of.”

 

Van Dijk is on track to captain Liverpool to their second Premier League title, with the team currently 13 points ahead of Arsenal. A win against Leicester City this weekend could seal the championship.

 

Individually, the defender has had an impressive season, scoring four goals and providing one assist across 44 matches in all competitions. He has now accumulated 27 goals and 13 assists in 314 appearances for Liverpool, collecting eight major trophies during his tenure.

 

According to The Athletic, Van Dijk’s new contract will keep him at the club until the end of the 2026–27 season, just shy of his 36th birthday. His reported weekly wage of £400,000 remains unchanged, and the new agreement does not include any break or release clauses.

 

Despite receiving interest from other clubs, Van Dijk remained fully committed to Liverpool. Meanwhile, while both Van Dijk and Salah will continue their journey with the club, Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to leave when his current deal expires this summer, with Real Madrid being the likely destination.

 

Nonetheless, keeping two of the club’s biggest stars on board is a significant win for Liverpool as they prepare for the next era.
