Manchester United’s defender Harry Maguire has expressed strong confidence in goalkeeper Andre Onana as the team prepares for their return to the UEFA Europa League.

After being sidelined for Manchester United’s recent loss to Newcastle due to two major mistakes in the Europa League quarter-final first leg against Lyon, goalkeeper Andre Onana is set to return. Coach Ruben Amorim confirmed the Cameroonian will start in the second leg at Old Trafford.

Despite criticism, including former United midfielder Nemanja Matic calling him one of the club’s worst goalkeepers, Onana is being supported by teammate Harry Maguire. Speaking to TNT Sports, Maguire expressed his belief that Onana is mentally strong and ready to bounce back.

“He’s been his usual self in training this week—energetic and positive,” Maguire said. “He was clearly disappointed about the goals conceded, but he’s a top-level keeper with loads of experience and a winning background. We trust he’ll deliver a strong performance.”

While Onana endured a tough night in France, teammate Leny Yoro had a milestone moment, scoring his first goal for United. Maguire praised Yoro’s header as an intelligent finish and called it his standout performance since joining the club.

With their Premier League and FA Cup hopes dashed, United’s only chance of silverware this season lies in the Europa League. Maguire admitted the season has fallen short of expectations, marked by inconsistency and missed chances in key moments.

Still, he remains hopeful. “Our fans have stuck with us all season. They deserve a reason to cheer, and we want to give them that in this final stretch.”
