Andre Onana’s future: Struggling goalkeeper ‘may be offered’ a way out of Manchester United amid recent poor form

Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana was not included in the squad for Manchester United’s 4-1 Premier League loss to Newcastle United on Sunday. His exclusion came after criticism over his performance in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final against Lyon on Thursday.

 

Onana was at fault for both of Lyon’s goals in the 2-2 draw, leaving the outcome of the tie uncertain ahead of this week’s return leg at Old Trafford.

 

United boss Ruben Amorim now faces a decision on whether to reinstate Onana for the crucial second leg. However, even if he returns, reports suggest that he is unlikely to retain his position as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper next season. The club is reportedly exploring alternatives in the transfer market.

 

Despite being under contract until 2028—with an option to extend—Onana may be on his way out this summer. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that clubs from Saudi Arabia remain interested in the former Inter Milan goalkeeper, having shown intent to sign him back in 2023 before he joined United.

 

Romano added that no final decision has been made regarding Onana’s future, although he is determined to regain his spot for Thursday’s clash with Lyon.

 

In light of the uncertainty surrounding Onana, United have been linked with several potential replacements. Among them is Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen, with the club reportedly initiating contact over a possible transfer.

 

Additionally, Manchester United have intensified their interest in Parma’s Zion Suzuki, who could be available for around £40 million.
