Paul Scholes has strongly criticized Casemiro for his “criminal” defensive performance in Manchester United’s derby defeat to Manchester City.

Despite United’s early lead from Marcus Rashford’s spectacular goal, City responded with goals from Phil Foden and Erling Haaland, ultimately securing a 3-1 victory.

While Casemiro had performed well for much of the match, Scholes pointed out his failure to react quickly enough during City’s second goal, where he was unable to track Foden’s movement after a one-two with Julian Alvarez.

Scholes, a United legend, expected better defensive awareness from Casemiro given his experience in the holding midfield role.

United aimed to preserve their slim one-goal advantage while playing away, but City’s superior quality eventually proved decisive.

Despite eight minutes of injury time being added at the end of the regulation 90 minutes, with the score still 2-1, Scholes acknowledged that City were more likely to extend their lead during that period than United were to equalize.

Scholes noted that once United fell behind, they struggled to find a response, lacking the possession-retaining ability and quality of Manchester City. As a result, their limitations became apparent towards the end of the match.

“You’re more concerned about preventing the score from becoming 4-1 or 5-1 rather than focusing on narrowing the gap to 3-2.

While playing for a draw might seem acceptable when adopting that approach, once the opposing team takes the lead, it appears dreadful.

When United fell behind, they needed to apply pressure on City, utilizing players like Rashford and Garnacho to attack the flanks, but they struggled to establish a sustained period of possession.

Despite the midfield’s defensive efforts holding up for a while, it’s challenging to assert dominance against a team like City when you hardly get any possession.”
