Sir Jim Ratcliffe is set to implement a change at Manchester United that was endorsed by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Manchester United icon Sir Alex Ferguson advised former CEO Richard Arnold to engage in discussions with Dan Ashworth just before Ashworth’s move to Newcastle in February 2022.

Manchester United appear to be on the brink of pursuing Dan Ashworth, years after Sir Alex Ferguson advised Richard Arnold to recruit the highly sought-after sporting director.

Ashworth, aged 52, is widely recognized as one of football’s sharpest minds, having served stints at The Football Association, Brighton, and Newcastle, where he was enticed to St. James’ Park in February 2022.

In recent weeks, there have been strong links between Ashworth and a move to United, with reports now indicating that an official approach is imminent. However, this isn’t the first time United have sought to secure Ashworth’s services.

A recent report from The Athletic reveals that Ferguson had previously instructed Arnold, the club’s former CEO, to explore the possibility of bringing Ashworth to Old Trafford.

While contact was made, it’s alleged that Ashworth declined formal discussions once it became apparent he would be working under football director John Murtough.

Since then, significant changes have occurred at Manchester United; Ineos now holds sway after Sir Jim Ratcliffe secured a £1.25 billion deal with the Glazers, acquiring a 25 percent stake in his childhood club.

The British billionaire and his team have taken charge of all sporting matters, with the appointment of a sporting director to oversee the club’s recruitment strategy becoming a top priority.

Given his noteworthy track record in the Premier League, Ashworth was inevitably linked with the role, alongside former Liverpool transfer guru Michael Edwards and Paul Mitchell. However, it appears that United have leaned towards Ashworth for the position.

Earlier this week, The Telegraph reported that the chance to join a club of Manchester United’s caliber would attract Ashworth, despite his frustration with ongoing speculation surrounding him. There are even suggestions that some within the Newcastle hierarchy are preparing for Ashworth’s possible departure.

Since Ratcliffe’s agreement with the Glazers was announced on Christmas Eve, United have made substantial efforts to enhance their infrastructure.

The team has already recruited Omar Berrada from nearby Manchester City to assume the position of their new chief executive.

Berrada is anticipated to begin his role before the 2024/25 season after giving notice to his current club, the champions.

He will succeed Arnold, who departed the club earlier this year. Patrick Stewart has been serving as interim CEO during this transition period.
