Liverpool might be eyeing an ideal replacement for Jurgen Klopp, thanks to an undisclosed contract clause.

The football community was taken aback on Friday with the revelation that Klopp will leave Liverpool at the conclusion of the ongoing season.

Liverpool’s official statement on their website read: “Jürgen Klopp has announced his decision to step down as Liverpool manager at the end of the current season, having informed the club’s ownership of his wish to leave his position when the 2023-24 campaign comes to a close.”

In preparation for the summer, Liverpool is intensifying efforts to secure a replacement for their manager, who secured the club’s inaugural Premier League title in 2020.

Remarkably, Liverpool may have an ideal successor already in mind. Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso is said to possess a clause in his contract that permits his departure to Liverpool, Real Madrid, or Bayer.

As reported by German news outlet BILD, this contractual provision is expected to become effective in the summer of 2024. Alonso assumed the role of Bayer Leverkusen boss in October 2022.

Since then, the Spaniard has orchestrated a remarkable turnaround for the team.

Presently, Alonso’s squad leads the Bundesliga table, holding a four-point advantage over reigning champions Bayern.

Discussing his unexpected announcement, Klopp stated, “I can understand that it’s a shock for a lot of people in this moment when you hear it for the first time, but obviously I can explain it – or at least try to explain it.

It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy. I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again.”
