Chelsea’s Champions League frustrations grew deeper on Tuesday night as a second-half collapse handed Atalanta a 2-1 win and extended the Blues’ winless run to four matches. But while the defeat raised several concerns, former Chelsea star Joe Cole insists one issue stands above the rest — and it is the same warning he has been giving for months.
Cole’s assessment was firm, and for many Chelsea supporters, painfully accurate. The club may have invested in some of the brightest young talents in Europe, but Cole believes the absence of true experience is now costing the team in the moments that matter most.
It is a problem that pundits, former players, and fans have repeated since the new ownership installed their long-term project. And on the evidence of another late collapse, it is a problem that continues to follow Chelsea into every big game.
A promising start, but familiar problems returned
Enzo Maresca entered the match in need of a statement performance. But after Chelsea took the lead through Joao Pedro — a much-needed confidence boost for the young striker — the same troubling patterns quickly re-emerged.
The first half was controlled, calm, and composed. Chelsea moved the ball with purpose, defended well in numbers, and limited Atalanta to few clear chances.
But after the break, everything changed. Atalanta stepped up their tempo, Chelsea stepped back, and the visitors were suddenly hanging on. When Gianluca Scamacca levelled the score and Charles De Ketelaere smashed in the winner, the Blues looked overwhelmed — not because of talent, but because of a lack of composure, leadership, and experience in key areas.
Cole summed it up bluntly on TNT Sports: “Chelsea matched them comfortably in the first half and took the lead. But they looked shaky after that and the frailties are clearly there.”
Maresca’s substitutions raise questions again
The conversation after the game didn’t only concern the collapse — it focused heavily on Maresca’s decisions from the bench.
Once again, his substitutions were widely criticised. Trevoh Chalobah was withdrawn at half-time for understandable reasons — he looked tired, and he was already on a yellow card. Wesley Fofana, his replacement, was later forced off with an eye issue.
But the planned changes, not the forced ones, caused frustration.
With Chelsea chasing the game, fans expected to see attacking talent introduced — especially explosive winger Estevao Willian, who remained on the bench despite the team desperately needing a moment of inspiration.
Instead, Maresca opted for Tosin Adarabioyo, a defender, in a moment that shocked supporters and left pundits confused.
Asked after the match why Estevao wasn’t brought on, Maresca insisted it was simply a matter of substitutions:
“The change of Tosin was because we needed to change Wes. For sure, with one more change there would have been a chance for Estevao or Andrey to come on.”
But the explanation did little to calm supporters. Chelsea already had five defenders on the pitch at the time, and the score was 1-1. The moment required boldness — instead, Maresca chose caution.

“I just keep coming back to it — there needs to be more experience in the squad to help the team get through these tricky games,” he said.
He highlighted that while Chelsea played brilliantly against Barcelona and Liverpool earlier this season, their follow-up performances have been inconsistent.
“There’s promise and some great performances but then there’s performances like tonight which drop off.”
For Cole, the pattern is obvious:
Chelsea show glimpses of brilliance, but lack the older voices who steady a team under pressure.
Record breaks in the worst way
To make matters worse, Chelsea shattered an impressive 12-year record in Bergamo.
The defeat marked the first time since 2013 that Chelsea lost a match after leading at half-time — an unbeaten run of 41 matches coming to an end.
If any statistic summed up the club’s current issues, it was that one.
The young side can start brightly. They can thrill. They can dominate possession.
But when momentum swings the other way, they often struggle to manage the pressure.
A must-win weekend ahead
With Chelsea now without a win in four matches, the pressure mounts on Maresca ahead of the weekend clash with Everton.
Cole did not hide the importance of what comes next.
“It makes this weekend very, very important. The Everton game is must-win.”
And he is right.
