Chelsea lose key players to injury at worst moment after strong performance against Liverpool

What was the worst thing that could possibly happen to Chelsea during this game against Liverpool?

There are a few things we’d prefer to avoid, but one of the top options was losing another defender to injury. Let alone two.

We’re already stripped to the bone, with Trevoh Chalobah suspended, Levi Colwill out for the season, Tosin Adarabioyo and Wesley Fofana not back until after the international break. Benoit Badiashile is only just back from his own persistent issue, and probably wouldn’t be starting today were it not for our desperation.

Now we’ve lost another two. Wouldn’t you just know it.

Hato on to replace hurt Acheampong

With an hour on the clock, Josh Acheampong – who stepped into central defence today was down on the ground in pain. He went off right away to be replaced by Jorrel Hato. Benoit Badiashile had already gone off ten minutes before.

Let’s hope it’s a minor one for Josh. He’s got a full fortnight to rest now while there’s an international break, and we hope to see him back to his best after that. This is a big season for him and every chance to play he misses is a blow.

We await Enzo Maresca’s post game press conference to find out how badly hurt the pair are. Badiashile’s looked worse.

Pair’s good showing cut short

The pair had been having really good games. Against a strong Liverpool attack they held his own, making just one notable mistake but otherwise keeping Alexander Isak and co. really quiet.

It’s just such a shame that Acheampong missed the chance to start against Lincoln with the flu, and then didn’t make it through today’s game either. Enzo Maresca is showing great trust in the youngster – but by the time he’s back the competition at centre back will be much more intense, and minutes even more difficult to come by.
