A recent report suggests that Darwin Núñez’s departure from Liverpool this summer could be hindered by the club’s valuation of the player.

 

Reports from Italy now indicate that AC Milan have entered the race to sign the Uruguayan forward. Núñez is widely expected to part ways with Liverpool after being handed just 17 starts in all competitions last season under Arne Slot—fewer than even backup goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher. His return was modest: seven goals, five assists, and nine yellow cards.

 

Earlier in January, Saudi clubs made an attempt to lure Núñez away, though Liverpool turned down the approach, aiming to keep the squad intact while they remained in the title conversation with Arsenal. That perspective appears to have shifted ahead of the new campaign, as interest from the Saudi Pro League has resurfaced.

 

Sky Italia reports that Núñez has already spoken with Al Hilal regarding a high-profile switch. At the same time, Milan are believed to have initiated discussions and may attempt a serious bid. However, financial limitations could pose a major obstacle.

 

Liverpool, who once shelled out up to £85 million ($112.9m) for Núñez depending on add-ons, are reportedly willing to accept around £43 million ($57.6m) this summer. That figure had previously deterred Napoli and may also exceed Milan’s current financial capacity, particularly as they face budget constraints after a disappointing eighth-place Serie A finish and a Coppa Italia final loss to Bologna. Following a managerial change from Sérgio Conceição to Massimiliano Allegri and the acquisition of Luka Modrić, Milan are being cautious without European competition revenue.

 

Meanwhile, Al Hilal—backed by considerable financial muscle—pose no such constraints. They had reportedly offered Newcastle’s Alexander Isak a salary of £600,000 per week ($797,000), though the striker turned them down. Liverpool could now turn their attention to Isak as a potential replacement, using funds potentially generated by Núñez’s exit to the Gulf.
