This wasn’t an isolated case either—Viktor Gyokeres reportedly turned down a move to Old Trafford to join Arsenal instead.

Such instances echo past transfer battles, including the high-profile signing of Virgil van Dijk in late 2017, when United tried and failed to hijack Liverpool’s deal for the Dutch defender.
