Manchester United Striving to Land La Liga Midfield Prospect for £21.5m Amid Need for Reinforcements

After a disappointing campaign in the final third last season, Manchester United have turned their attention toward strengthening their attacking options during the current transfer window. Yet, manager Ruben Amorim also recognizes the need to bolster other key departments on the pitch—particularly in midfield.

Recent reports suggest the Red Devils are seriously pursuing Valencia starlet Javi Guerra. Earlier, Italian journalist Daniele Longo indicated that the 22-year-old, valued at £21.5 million, has given a verbal commitment to join United, despite attracting interest from several top European clubs.

Now, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes, United are preparing a formal offer and are eager to complete the signing swiftly for around €25 million (£21.5 million).

United’s Midfield Issues

Upgrading the midfield is a top priority at Old Trafford. Casemiro’s performances last season fell well below expectations, with the Brazilian veteran widely regarded as one of the team’s poorest performers. A departure this summer could be on the cards.

Meanwhile, Manuel Ugarte—who previously thrived under Amorim at Sporting—has yet to consistently impress in a defensive midfield role since arriving. He’ll need to raise his game significantly moving forward.

Mason Mount has also struggled with recurring injuries, limiting his impact since arriving from Chelsea. Among the younger options, Toby Collyer lacks first-team experience, and while Kobbie Mainoo has shown promise, he must take on more responsibility in midfield.

Captain Bruno Fernandes remains the only midfielder who delivered consistent performances last season.

Javi Guerra, known for his versatility across central midfield roles, is most effective in a box-to-box No. 8 role. During the previous La Liga campaign, he contributed three goals and three assists for Valencia—highlighting his potential to add energy and creativity to United’s engine room.
