Analysis: Advantages and Disadvantages of Viktor Gyokeres Joining Arsenal

0

Arsenal are still yet to finalize who will lead their front line for the 2025/26 campaign.

The North London club is actively looking to reinforce their attacking options, with summer links to Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko continuing to dominate the conversation.

Although both strikers have been heavily discussed as potential additions, no concrete deal has been reached. Talks are said to have progressed at different points, but nothing has been agreed, and the Gunners remain without a confirmed signing in that position.

Gyokeres has garnered the most attention lately. With a staggering 97 goals in 102 matches for Sporting CP, his track record in front of goal is hard to ignore. He reportedly has a strong desire to join Arsenal and even rejected a move to Manchester United under former manager Ruben Amorim.

Physically imposing and versatile in his finishing, the Swedish international appears well-suited to the demands of Premier League football. His acceleration and strength could make him a serious threat in England’s top flight.

However, there are drawbacks. At 27, Gyokeres is older than Sesko and wouldn’t offer much resale value. Additionally, critics point to his lack of experience in Europe’s top five leagues. While he featured in the 2024/25 Champions League, the step up to the Premier League still represents a gamble.

There have also been controversial reports suggesting he might be willing to go on strike to force a transfer, and even that he ended a personal relationship to make a move easier—though these claims remain unconfirmed.

In contrast, Sesko—considered a younger, long-term investment—may appeal to Arsenal’s forward-planning strategy. Still, Gyokeres’ sheer scoring ability makes him a compelling short-term solution.

Arsenal have the creative depth to supply chances; now they need a clinical finisher to convert them. Gyokeres could be that missing piece.
