Gyökeres Refuses to Play for Sporting CP Again Amid Transfer Dispute

Viktor Gyökeres has reportedly informed Sporting CP that he will not play for the club again, following a breakdown in trust regarding a previously agreed transfer deal.

The 27-year-old forward had a verbal agreement with Sporting to leave this summer for a fee of €60 million (£50.8m), with an additional €10 million in performance-related bonuses. However, it has recently emerged that club president Frederico Varandas has moved the goalposts, now demanding €80 million for the Swedish striker — a decision that has sparked outrage from the player.

According to the Portuguese newspaper Record (print edition, page 8), Gyökeres has expressed his anger directly to the club and has made it clear that he will not return to Sporting’s José Alvalade Stadium. The report states:

Interest in the prolific striker remains high, with Record confirming that Al-Hilal, Juventus, Arsenal, and Manchester United are all in the hunt for his signature.

Despite a massive £570,000-a-week offer from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, Gyökeres is understood to prefer staying in Europe. While Juventus remain an option, financial limitations and wage restrictions in Italy could hinder a deal. This narrows the race to two serious contenders: Manchester United and Arsenal.

While Record suggests Arsenal are currently best placed to make a formal move, other outlets have reported that the North London club is heavily focused on RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško.
