Liverpool’s top transfer target for the upcoming summer window has been identified, with one standout player emerging as the leading candidate.

With Manchester City likely to bounce back stronger after a disappointing campaign, the title race is expected to be far more competitive. Arsenal’s slip-ups last season also hint at a tighter contest ahead.
Adding to the complexity, the 2026 African Cup of Nations will impact Liverpool more than most, with Mohamed Salah set to miss key games. Additionally, the Reds are preparing for life without Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is set to join Real Madrid.
While Liverpool won’t participate in the revamped Club World Cup like Chelsea and Manchester City, there’s a pressing need to refresh the squad. This makes it crucial for the club to execute a near-perfect transfer window to maintain and build on the momentum from this past season.
Top Priority: Strengthening the Left-Back Position
According to The Athletic, Liverpool’s main focus this summer is to sign a new left-back. While Jeremie Frimpong remains a top target and talks are progressing, the club considers bolstering the left side of defense even more urgent.
Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas are currently in that role, but Tsimikas is expected to leave if a new signing is secured. Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez has emerged as a strong candidate, though not the only one under consideration.
Although Frimpong could still arrive, Liverpool see Conor Bradley as a potential starter at right-back, with Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah available to provide cover.
There’s also interest in a new centre-back, but a move for Dean Huijsen might be blocked due to Xabi Alonso’s involvement.
Why Frimpong Remains in the Picture
Frimpong appeals to Liverpool for several reasons: his reasonable release clause of £29–33 million, his strong personality and popularity at Bayer Leverkusen, and existing friendships with Liverpool stars like Gravenberch, Van Dijk, and Gakpo.
Importantly, Frimpong qualifies as a homegrown player due to his time at Manchester City, which would help balance the squad following Alexander-Arnold’s exit. Liverpool currently have just one non-homegrown slot available, a figure that could increase with summer outgoings.
