Reece James Set to Miss Liverpool Clash Following Maresca’s Tactical Choice

Chelsea fans hoping to see Reece James going up against Liverpool this weekend may be in for a letdown as head coach Enzo Maresca has apparently already made his decision.

James, who has been beset by a series of injuries throughout his career, is being handled with extreme caution as he works his way to full fitness. While most players would be desperate for every start, especially after such extended layoffs, James is in the rare situation where playing too much could invite another breakdown.

Maresca has been open about his plan—he will not start James in two games within a matter of days, particularly when there are games scheduled between Thursday and Sunday. Having featured in tonight’s game, it’s now highly unlikely he will be in the starting XI for Sunday’s showdown with Liverpool.

For all of that, James will certainly be relieved to be back on the field, even if his appearances are carefully managed. Maresca was eager to point out the defender’s value to the side at the pre-match press conference:

“Reece brings a lot to the team, especially in big-game matches. His experience is vital in being able to help guide others. We’ve changed eight tonight as we believe it’s the right team for the task ahead.”

Although fans may be disappointed not to see James playing at Anfield, it’s clear that Maresca is taking a long-term approach when it comes to the fitness of his captain.
