Manchester United ‘negotiating new deal’ with player sidelined for two years
Veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton, who hasn’t featured in a match for Manchester United over the past two seasons, is reportedly discussing a possible 12-month contract extension. At 39, Heaton has served as the club’s third-choice option behind Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, though recent uncertainty surrounding both players has sparked speculation about his future role.
Onana has come under criticism following several high-profile errors, raising questions about his long-term suitability as United’s first-choice keeper. Meanwhile, Bayindir has made limited impact during his appearances and is widely expected to depart the club. Since returning to United, Heaton has made just three appearances in four years, though he was included in Ruben Amorim’s squad for the recent 1-1 draw against Bournemouth.
According to the Daily Mail, Heaton is in discussions to remain with the team as a third-choice goalkeeper for another season. While there had been speculation about him transitioning into a coaching position, the club might instead retain him as a senior presence in the locker room. If he agrees to the extension, he would join the small group of Premier League players still active at age 40.
Though rumors have linked Onana with a move to Saudi club Neom, the report suggests such talk is premature. Despite interest from the Saudi Pro League, strong competition is expected from European sides if Onana is made available.
Manager Ruben Amorim appears to be focusing his summer plans elsewhere, possibly offering Onana another chance after a difficult season. Strengthening the attack is reportedly a top priority, with United closing in on a £62.5 million move for Wolves striker Matheus Cunha and eyeing Liam Delap, available for £30 million following Ipswich’s relegation.
When asked by Sky Sports about his transfer priorities, Amorim said, “I have made my decisions, but I won’t disclose them while the season is ongoing. Things can quickly change—if a target becomes unavailable, we may have to adjust our focus. Injuries like Amad’s can also shift our needs. Still, I know exactly what this team requires for next season.”
