Chelsea set to replace player admired by Enzo Maresca as they eye European star: report

Chelsea are reportedly open to parting ways with one of Enzo Maresca’s preferred players this summer as they seek to strengthen their squad. Following their recent draw with Ipswich, which left them sixth in the Premier League, the Blues are under pressure to secure Champions League qualification—something Maresca sees as essential.

If they fail to make the top four, it could spark further changes within the team as the club continues its pursuit of the right squad balance to compete for major honours. With several players expected to leave, Chelsea should have significant funds available to attract top-tier talent.

According to reports from Spanish outlet Fichajes, one of the possible exits could be Wesley Fofana—despite Maresca’s admiration for him—due to his ongoing injury struggles. Since joining from Leicester in a big-money move in 2022, Fofana has only managed 34 appearances, and the club may be ready to cut ties.

In his place, Chelsea are eyeing a major upgrade: Barcelona’s versatile defender Jules Kounde. Both Chelsea and Arsenal are said to be ready to meet Barcelona’s €75m asking price amid the Spanish club’s financial troubles. Kounde, who can play as a centre-back or right-back, is seen as a significant reinforcement who could immediately boost Chelsea’s backline.

While Maresca is reportedly fond of Fofana, Chelsea may be ready to prioritize reliability and experience by pursuing Kounde this summer.
