Gary Neville says he has confidence in only two Manchester United players, criticizing the rest of the squad as lacking quality.

Manchester United icon Gary Neville has raised concerns about the overall quality within Ruben Amorim’s team, stating that only two players have earned his full confidence.

 

The Red Devils hit a new low in their season with a crushing 4-1 loss to Newcastle at St James’ Park, following a dismal second-half showing. That defeat left them languishing in 14th place, and even if they win their final six matches, they’re on track to record their worst-ever Premier League points total.

 

With their domestic hopes fading, United’s last remaining opportunity to salvage their season lies in the Europa League, where they face immense pressure ahead of their quarter-final second leg against Lyon, following a 2-2 draw in the first leg.

 

The club’s leadership is reportedly prepared to heavily invest in the summer, with plans to rebuild the squad under Amorim in hopes of returning to past glories.

 

However, Neville admitted he’s at a loss when it comes to pinpointing where to begin fixing the squad’s problems, which he believes span from the goalkeeper to the forwards. Speaking to NBC Sports, he expressed doubt over the club’s recruitment direction, noting the need for serious, well-thought-out signings.

 

When asked about the current roster, Neville highlighted only Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo as players he fully trusts. He acknowledged that while the squad may not be lacking in effort, they fall significantly short of the quality expected at Manchester United.

 

“The issue isn’t work rate,” Neville explained. “It’s the overall standard across the pitch that’s alarmingly low. Aside from Bruno and perhaps Amad, there’s nobody else I feel confident backing. The squad is in a dire state, with an unfortunate mix of aging players, underprepared youth, and a middle group that’s not delivering. It’s a deeply concerning scenario.”
