Jamie Carragher criticized one Chelsea player for what he described as a “ridiculous” error during their draw with Ipswich on Sunday and pointed to a clear “disconnect” that could ultimately cost manager Enzo Maresca his job at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have struggled this season, winning only five of their 16 Premier League matches. After drawing with Brentford and now Ipswich, they’ve slipped to sixth place, falling out of contention for Champions League qualification.

Despite showing resilience by coming back from a two-goal deficit and registering 34 shots—the most under Maresca—the atmosphere among supporters remains tense. Fans expressed their dissatisfaction during the game, which Maresca later suggested caused his players to stray from the original tactics.

On Monday Night Football, Carragher analyzed Ben Johnson’s goal, Ipswich’s second of the match, as an example of the apparent disconnect between the team and its fans.

Carragher explained that Maresca was urging Cole Palmer to press higher and apply pressure to the opposing goalkeeper, but crowd boos made it clear they didn’t support playing out from the back. The goalkeeper reacted to the unrest by motioning his teammates forward and attempting a long ball, which Carragher pointed out went straight to Ipswich defender Burgess—strong in aerial duels—calling it a poor decision.

He further criticized the players’ positioning, saying that Fernandez was out of place with an Ipswich player behind him, and called Chalobah’s positioning “absolutely ridiculous,” suggesting the team isn’t familiar or comfortable with going long from goal kicks.
