Roman Abramovich’s Frozen Chelsea Funds: Two-Year Stalemate Sparks Urgent Calls for Resolution

Former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich remains entangled in a financial deadlock as the proceeds from the club’s sale—intended to aid victims of the Ukraine war—remain frozen in a UK bank account. Despite pledging that the funds from Chelsea’s £2.5 billion sale in May 2022 would go towards humanitarian efforts, legal complexities and financial sanctions continue to prevent their release.

Abramovich, sanctioned by the UK government due to alleged ties with the Russian state, has been unable to access the money, which is still held under strict regulatory oversight. The British government, in collaboration with international partners, has expressed its commitment to ensuring the funds are directed to those in need. However, nearly three years have passed without a single penny reaching Ukraine.

The situation has prompted renewed concerns from political figures. Former sports minister Richard Caborn has urged Labour leader Keir Starmer to push the Foreign Office to prioritize the matter, warning that the delay is unacceptable given the urgent humanitarian crisis. Similarly, Dame Caroline Dinenage, Chairwoman of the DCMS Select Committee, has emphasized the need for a swift resolution to provide clarity and peace of mind.

Meanwhile, Abramovich’s business interests remain under scrutiny. His holding company, Fordstam Limited, continues to operate despite not filing tax records since 2021, and another of his firms, MHC (Services) Limited, has been stuck in limbo, unable to distribute assets due to government restrictions.

The ongoing impasse raises pressing questions about what will happen to the funds if sanctions are lifted as part of a future peace agreement. With billions at stake, the situation remains a high-profile financial and political dilemma—one that demands urgent action.
