Van Dijk’s ‘horrible’ request
Despite the squad’s contract uncertainties, Liverpool are leading the Premier League title race. Club captain Virgil van Dijk has urged fans to create an intimidating atmosphere at Anfield to boost the team’s chances.
“How many home games are left? Seven out of 11. So, let’s make sure those seven are going to be amazing, as loud as possible,” Van Dijk told the Daily Mail. “I think it only helps us and them [the supporters] as well to make Anfield horrible for the opponent.”
His comments came before Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle, leaving only six home matches remaining — potentially his last appearances at Anfield if no new deal is reached.
With Liverpool closing in on their 20th league title, a hostile home atmosphere could be a decisive factor in their pursuit of glory.
Van Dijk’s contract situation
The Dutch defender has maintained a composed attitude regarding his contract discussions while delivering consistent performances on the pitch.
Reports suggest a contract extension is being negotiated, which could make him the highest-paid centre-back in Europe. However, if no agreement is reached, clubs from Saudi Arabia are among those interested in signing him.
Van Dijk has already lifted the Carabao Cup as Liverpool captain and will have the chance to secure another trophy in the upcoming League Cup final against Newcastle on 16 March. Should Liverpool claim the Premier League title, he would become only the second captain in over three decades to lead the club to domestic league success.
Although his future remains uncertain, Liverpool fans are expected to answer his call and make Anfield an intimidating fortress for the final six home fixtures.
