Paul Merson passionately criticizes Liverpool as he shares his prediction for their upcoming clash with Newcastle.
Newcastle United face a daunting challenge as they attempt to overcome a Liverpool side that appears unstoppable. The two teams will clash at Anfield on Wednesday night, with an 8:15 p.m. kick-off broadcast live on TNT Sports.
Given Newcastle’s recent second-half display and Liverpool’s dominant victory over Manchester City on the same day, it’s unlikely that many pundits will back the Magpies for a win. However, Newcastle has a history of stepping up in big matches, even though their record against Liverpool—particularly at Anfield—has been poor, with over 30 years since their last victory there. Despite this, they often manage to put up a strong fight.
At some point, Newcastle will break their losing streak at Anfield, potentially paving the way for a new era of success. Whether that moment comes in this match, however, remains uncertain.
Paul Merson, for one, isn’t optimistic about Newcastle’s chances. In his prediction for Sportskeeda, he largely focused on Liverpool’s strengths, emphasizing their quality and dominance.
“Newcastle had a shaky start in their last game before an explosive 12-minute spell gave them a commanding lead. Yet, they nearly let Nottingham Forest mount a comeback in a chaotic 4-3 finish. If they allow this game to turn into an open contest with both sides trading shots, Liverpool will punish them.
“I don’t think Liverpool gets enough recognition for how good they are. They completely outclassed Manchester City and are an incredible team. If they win this match and Arsenal lose, as I predicted, they could start rotating players in the league to focus on their Champions League campaign, which would be a huge advantage for them in Europe.
“Prediction: Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle United.”
