Sir Alex Ferguson was reportedly disturbed by the decision at Manchester United before he forcefully dismissed what he called a baseless claim.

Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that he was deeply troubled by the dismissal of David Moyes over a decade ago and strongly refuted claims that he had left Manchester United in decline.

 

After securing his 13th and final Premier League title in 2013, Ferguson retired and handpicked Moyes as his successor at Old Trafford. Despite an encouraging start, including a 4-1 victory over Swansea City, Moyes quickly faced challenges, leading to a downturn in performance.

 

Moyes’ tenure lasted only 10 months, with United slipping to seventh place before he was ultimately sacked. His final game was a 2-0 loss to Everton, the club he had previously managed and returned to in January. Since rejoining Everton, he has led them to four wins and a draw against Liverpool in his last five matches. Ferguson sympathized with Moyes’ departure but dismissed any suggestion that United’s struggles were due to the state of the squad he had left behind.

 

During a charity dinner, Ferguson described Moyes’ dismissal as “upsetting” and detailed how it unfolded, including a meeting with Ed Woodward that led to Moyes’ exit. Ryan Giggs was then appointed as interim manager for the remainder of the season.

 

In his autobiography, Ferguson rejected criticism that he had left an unprepared team, emphasizing that the transition was handled professionally and thoroughly. He also reflected on Moyes’ struggles, acknowledging how each loss weighed heavily on him. The signing of Juan Mata in January 2014 provided a brief morale boost, but as results continued to worsen, the pressure became overwhelming. Ferguson compared it to his own difficult period in 1989, describing the feeling of being “crushed” by mounting losses.

 

Now, nearly 11 years after his departure from United, Moyes is back at Everton and is set to face Ruben Amorim’s struggling United side. With Everton currently outperforming United and climbing to 14th place, they head into their upcoming match as the likely favorites.
