Glenn Hoddle Advocates for Pedro Neto’s Consistent Inclusion in Chelsea’s Starting XI
Former Chelsea manager Glenn Hoddle has strongly urged current boss Enzo Maresca to make Pedro Neto a permanent fixture in the starting lineup rather than rotating him in and out. Hoddle believes that regular game time would help the Portuguese winger regain his best form.
Maresca had a promising start to his tenure at Chelsea, but as the team’s form has dipped since December, his decisions are now facing greater scrutiny. Earlier in the season, some players who performed well in cup competitions were frustrated at being overlooked for Premier League matches. Now, Maresca’s frequent squad rotations are contributing to inconsistency on the pitch.
Hoddle specifically pointed out that Neto, who joined from Wolverhampton Wanderers last summer, has yet to fully establish himself due to irregular playing time. Speaking to The Athletic, he emphasized that Neto is most effective when cutting inside from the right wing onto his stronger left foot. “If he knows he’s starting every week, you’ll see him grow into the player he was at Wolves,” Hoddle stated. “Give him the shirt and let him play on the right flank.”
Despite making 29 appearances for Chelsea this season, Neto has only managed four goals and five assists. His role has varied between the left and right wings, but Hoddle insists that a consistent position would help him build rhythm and confidence.
With fellow winger Noni Madueke sidelined due to a hamstring injury, Neto now has an opportunity to secure a regular spot on the right flank. Chelsea has heavily relied on Cole Palmer for attacking inspiration, but Neto must step up and contribute more.
Meanwhile, former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy believes Neto could be a key factor in solving the club’s struggles in the striker position. However, frequent tactical adjustments may be hindering his ability to settle into a rhythm. If given an extended run in his preferred position, Neto could finally deliver the performances Chelsea expected when they signed him.
