Darwin Nunez’s Future at Liverpool: A Transfer That Almost Happened

Darwin Nunez’s turbulent journey at Anfield was encapsulated by his recent struggles, and if Liverpool had secured a suitable replacement in January, his latest misfortune might never have occurred.

Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently disclosed that Liverpool was on the brink of selling Nunez to Saudi club Al-Nassr during the winter transfer window. Negotiations had reached an advanced stage, with both clubs and the player himself aligned on the move. However, Liverpool ultimately decided to pull the plug at the last moment.

The club’s reasoning was twofold. At the time, they were competing in four different tournaments, making squad depth a pressing concern. Additionally, their primary summer transfer targets were unavailable for an early move, leaving them with no viable alternatives mid-season. As a result, Liverpool opted to retain Nunez to ensure incoming manager Arne Slot had sufficient attacking options for the remainder of the campaign.

Despite this temporary stay, Romano has since suggested that a move to Saudi Arabia is likely back on the cards. Expectations are growing that Liverpool will approve the transfer this summer, potentially bringing Nunez’s Premier League chapter to an end. If the deal materializes, it would mark a significant shift for both player and club as they move in different directions.
