Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has criticized the club for missing the opportunity to strengthen two key positions during the January transfer window.

Under new head coach Enzo Maresca, Chelsea enjoyed an impressive start to the season, suffering just two league defeats before Christmas. However, their form has dipped significantly, with only three wins in their last nine matches across all competitions, leaving them fourth in the Premier League and trailing leaders Liverpool by 13 points.

This decline has fueled frustration among Chelsea fans, many of whom were calling for reinforcements in both attack and defense during the winter transfer period. Concerns over Robert Sanchez’s performances in goal have grown, as he currently leads the league in errors leading to goals. Meanwhile, striker Nicolas Jackson has struggled for confidence, failing to find the net in his last eight appearances.

Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel addressed Jackson’s poor form, stating, “As a striker, going eight games without scoring is a huge problem.” However, he emphasized that the responsibility for scoring should not rest solely on Jackson’s shoulders. “We need goals from [Noni] Madueke, Pedro Neto, and [Jadon] Sancho, not just Nicolas,” he added.

Chelsea’s recent match against West Ham saw Jackson substituted in the 52nd minute, with 18-year-old Marc Guiu brought on in his place. Mikel acknowledged Guiu’s talent but argued that he is not yet the reliable goal scorer Chelsea needs in crucial moments. “He’s a young player with potential, but he’s not the striker you bring in when you need goals to win games,” Mikel said.

Mikel also expressed disappointment that Chelsea failed to sign a new goalkeeper and striker during the January window. “Now the window is shut, and we didn’t address the positions that could help us secure a top-four finish,” he lamented.

Beyond Jackson’s struggles, Mikel highlighted Jadon Sancho’s recent dip in form. The former Manchester United winger started strongly at Chelsea but has since failed to make an impact. “At first, he showed why he was a great signing—taking on defenders, creating chances—but now his performances have dropped significantly,” Mikel noted.

With Chelsea’s inconsistency becoming a concern, Mikel believes the team needs urgent improvements if they hope to secure Champions League football next season.
