Chris Sutton believes Ruben Amorim is not in immediate danger of being sacked as Manchester United manager but has urged the players to eliminate “under-12s” level mistakes to support their coach.

Since taking charge at Old Trafford on November 11th, Amorim has overseen 10 matches following his move from Sporting CP to replace Erik ten Hag. However, his tenure has started poorly, with United losing half of those games, exiting the EFL Cup, and dropping to 14th in the Premier League.

United’s latest defeat, a 2-0 loss to Wolves, leaves them closer to the relegation zone than the top four. Despite the struggles, Sutton sees no immediate threat to Amorim’s position but has called on the squad to raise their performance levels, particularly highlighting errors from goalkeepers Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir in recent matches against Wolves and Tottenham.

Writing in his BBC Sport predictions column, Sutton said, “I’m not worried about Amorim being sacked, but it doesn’t help when your goalkeeper concedes directly from a corner—that’s under-12s stuff. I’ve seen it happen in youth matches, but you wouldn’t expect it from professionals. Yet, it’s happened twice in two weeks for Manchester United.”

Sutton also reflected on his previous predictions, acknowledging he had been too lenient towards United. “I was far too kind when I predicted a draw at Wolves last week,” he admitted. “Their fans give me so much stick on social media when I predict losses that I let it influence me. But the truth is, they’re playing terribly.”

Sutton emphasized that the team’s current struggles are not entirely on Amorim, as he has yet to bring in his own players. However, he didn’t mince words about United’s current state, stating, “For now, we have to see them for what they are—a really poor side.”
