Jaap Stam has expressed his willingness to make a dramatic return to Manchester United, 23 years after his controversial departure from the club.

The Dutchman, who played three seasons at Old Trafford, revealed his desire to help restore the team to its former glory amid their ongoing domestic struggles.

Ruben Amorim’s arrival in November brought renewed optimism, particularly after United’s 2-1 triumph over Manchester City earlier this month.

However, losses to Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Tottenham, and Bournemouth have highlighted the challenges ahead as the Red Devils aim to return to their trophy-winning ways.

In an interview with Sports Lens, Stam, a former Feyenoord and Reading manager, shared his enthusiasm for contributing to the club. “I’d love to coach at Manchester United, but they haven’t called,” he admitted.

He added, “Everyone associated with the club would love to return and help. Having been in management, I know the demands, and assisting in any capacity would be fantastic.

I’d particularly enjoy helping with the defense. Of course, there are already many staff members, but you never know what the future holds.”

Currently 13th in the Premier League table, United face Wolves on Boxing Day in a bid to climb out of the bottom half for the first time since 1989.

Stam acknowledged the pressure on Amorim, stating, “This is a transition period, and players need time to adapt. However, winning matches is crucial to climbing the table and building momentum.”

Stam himself enjoyed tremendous success at United, winning six major honors during his three years with the club. Signed in 1998 for a then-record £10.6 million, he was instrumental in securing the historic Treble in his debut season.

Despite his achievements, Stam was controversially sold to Lazio in 2001, a decision Sir Alex Ferguson later admitted was a mistake.

After retiring in 2007, Stam transitioned into coaching, working with teams like PEC Zwolle, Ajax, Feyenoord, and Reading. Now managing Dutch sixth-tier side DOS Kampen, the 52-year-old remains eager to assist his former club during their rebuilding phase.

United, desperate to bounce back from a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth, will aim to capitalize on their strong record against Wolves, having won eight of their last 10 meetings. A victory could lift them into the top half of the table, providing a much-needed boost for Amorim and his squad.
