Manchester United’s Carabao Cup campaign came to an end following a 4-3 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in North London on Thursday evening. Despite a spirited effort, the Red Devils were unable to mount another late comeback.

Manager Ruben Amorim made five changes to the lineup that had secured a Premier League victory over Manchester City on Sunday, including swapping goalkeeper Andre Onana for Altay Bayindir.

Onana, who has been exceptional this season, was given a rare rest, allowing Bayindir to make his third appearance of the season after previous outings in the Carabao Cup against Barnsley and Leicester City.

Unfortunately, Bayindir struggled to seize the opportunity. The Turkey international made two critical errors, starting with Tottenham’s opening goal. Following a set-piece, Pedro Porro’s shot from the edge of the box was poorly parried by Bayindir into the path of Solanke, who capitalized to put Spurs ahead.

Pundit Gary Neville criticized Bayindir’s handling of the situation, calling the goal a “gift” and noting that the keeper should have pushed the ball wide rather than into a dangerous area. Bayindir found himself in trouble again when Son Heung-Min scored directly from a corner later in the match. While Bayindir argued he was impeded, the goal stood.

The disappointing performance has placed Bayindir’s future at Old Trafford in doubt. Earlier this month, the 26-year-old expressed frustration over limited game time and hinted at a potential move in search of more opportunities.

With his departure expected by 2025, United have reportedly identified a potential replacement in John Victor, a highly-rated goalkeeper from Botafogo in Brazil. Victor, who was recently named the best player in Brazil, is valued at £20 million and could step in as United’s second-choice keeper if Bayindir departs in January or the summer.
