Ruben Amorim has suggested that Bruno Fernandes could take on a deeper midfield role more frequently following his impressive performance in Manchester United’s Europa League victory over Bodo/Glimt.

In Thursday’s 3-2 win at Old Trafford, Fernandes partnered Manuel Ugarte in central midfield within Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation. This marked a shift for the United captain, who had played in a more advanced role in Amorim’s debut game, a 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town.

Although Fernandes is traditionally a No. 10, Amorim’s system does not feature that position. After the match, Amorim expressed his satisfaction with Fernandes’ adaptability, stating to TNT Sports: “You can see his experience. He dictates the tempo of play, and he was crucial in initiating our attacks. Against their back four, he excelled at switching play, which was exactly what we needed.”

Amorim hinted at Fernandes continuing in a deeper role, saying, “I think he is a midfielder,” potentially positioning him as part of a double pivot rather than in a front three alongside Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford, which he experimented with at Ipswich.

United’s win over Bodo/Glimt was secured with Garnacho’s early goal and two second-half strikes from Rasmus Hojlund. Amorim will now prepare for his first Premier League home game in charge, with United set to face Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday.
