Ruben Amorim has agreed to take on the role of Manchester United’s new manager; however, his current club, Sporting Lisbon, is preventing the 39-year-old from departing Portugal right away.
Manchester United fans will have to wait nearly a month to see Ruben Amorim’s debut as manager. After United’s full agreement with Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday, Amorim, 39, was selected to replace Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed on Monday after United’s dismal season start left them 14th in the Premier League.
Ruud van Nistelrooy has taken on the role of caretaker manager, leading United to an exciting 5-2 Carabao Cup victory over Leicester City. It was initially hoped that Amorim might join the team on the sidelines this Sunday against Chelsea. However, Van Nistelrooy will need to manage three more games before Amorim steps in.
Following a £10m agreement, Amorim will complete his 30-day notice period at Sporting Lisbon, with three fixtures remaining, including facing Estrela da Amadora on Friday, Manchester City in the Champions League next Tuesday, and a farewell match against Braga on Sunday, November 10. This timeline means Amorim’s debut as United’s manager will be on Sunday, November 24, in an away game against Ipswich Town, where United will face former coach Kieran McKenna.
After Chelsea, Van Nistelrooy’s squad will face Greek side PAOK Thessaloniki in the Europa League, where they’re yet to secure a victory.
