According to a live report from Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have decided to sell one of their players in the upcoming January transfer window. The club no longer views him as part of their long-term plans and is actively seeking to offload him. After offloading several unwanted players during the summer, including Romelu Lukaku, the club managed to balance some of their spending but still hasn’t fully trimmed the squad.

Ben Chilwell and Carney Chukwuemeka, though integrated back into the first team, remain on the outskirts under manager Enzo Maresca, who has suggested they won’t be regular starters.

 

Both Chilwell and Chukwuemeka were initially part of the so-called “bomb squad” in preseason, a term used for players not seen as part of the manager’s long-term plans.

Regarding Chukwuemeka, Maresca stated, “Carney is a very talented player, but with the squad we have, it’s better for him to go somewhere else, play 30 or 35 games, and develop, rather than stay here with limited chances.”

Despite this, a move for Chukwuemeka didn’t materialize, and he remains at Stamford Bridge. Maresca has given him some game time recently, but he wasn’t involved in the latest match, with hopes that he may see more minutes in the future.

 

However, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are planning to sell Chukwuemeka in January. The club is actively looking for a new destination for him.

Though signed for £20 million from Aston Villa in 2022, Chukwuemeka has struggled to secure a consistent spot in the Chelsea lineup.

 

Romano explained that Chelsea were willing to let Chukwuemeka go during the summer, but only if a club could guarantee him regular playing time.

Potential moves to clubs like AC Milan were rejected because they couldn’t assure him a starting role. Romano noted, “Maresca has been clear with his players, and Chelsea’s priority was for Carney to join a team where he could play at least 38 games, not sit on the bench.”

 

Now that Chukwuemeka has remained but isn’t playing consistently, Chelsea are expected to push for a transfer in January, with both the player and the club agreeing that regular playing time is essential. Discussions are already in progress to find the right move for him.
