“He is not well suited for the competitiveness of the Premier League maybe he might do well in Ligue 1 or some other low level league but not in the Premier League. Ratcliffe should enforce his exit next transfer window so there’s more focus on actual good players” – This is according to Football legend Michael Owen as he asserts that a Manchester United player “isn’t suited to the Premier League.”
Michael Owen has stated that Manchester United winger Antony lacks the quality to succeed in the Premier League, despite his evident talent.
Michael Owen has stated that Manchester United winger Antony lacks the quality to succeed in the Premier League, despite his evident talent.
The Brazilian joined United for £85 million from Ajax over two years ago on Erik ten Hag’s recommendation, but he has struggled to meet expectations.
Although Antony netted his first goal of the season in last week’s 7-0 EFL Cup victory against Barnsley, he has only played one minute in the league so far this season.
Ten Hag has emphasized that the 24-year-old needs to “earn the right” to be part of the squad, but Owen is concerned that Antony may never justify his hefty price tag.
“I haven’t seen enough positive contributions from Antony since he joined to justify him starting every match for Manchester United,” the former striker told Metro.co.uk. “He’s clearly very talented, and given the significant investment, the club is eager to see him perform well and find his rhythm.”
“I just don’t think his skills are well-suited for the Premier League. I don’t believe he’s fast enough. When he attempts a trick, he lacks the burst and speed needed to get past defenders.”
Antony was rumored to be heading out on loan during the final days of the summer transfer window but chose to stay and fight for his spot at Old Trafford. However, Owen thinks that a fresh start might benefit the Brazilian if he hopes to regain the form that made him successful at Ajax.
“He might excel in a different team, but in this current Manchester United squad, it’s challenging for any player to truly stand out, as we’ve seen with recent signings over the last five to ten years,” Owen added.
“But if he were to start in a game next week, I wouldn’t be feeling particularly excited about it.
“I believe I’ve seen enough to think that it might be difficult for him, but maybe a change of manager, team, or some other factor could reignite his performance. That’s something to consider for the future.”
Manchester United, currently sitting 11th in the Premier League after five matches, will play Europa League opponents FC Twente on Wednesday night before facing Tottenham at home next weekend.
