“This isn’t for you. You can’t survive in the Premier League like this. You should move another before your career suffers. You are not good enough for such a prestigious Club”– This is according to Former Manchester United goalkeeper and legend Peter Schemeichel as he returns to Old Trafford with harsh advice for the current Manchester United Goal keeper Andre Onana.

Andre Onana has been advised to leave Manchester United if he can’t cope with the pressure associated with the role.

Onana, who transferred from Inter Milan to United last summer for an initial fee of £43.8 million plus £3.4 million in add-ons, had a challenging debut season.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper made several high-profile mistakes and conceded 83 goals across all competitions, managing only 13 clean sheets in 51 appearances.

As the 2024/25 season begins, Onana remains under scrutiny, especially after United spent heavily to strengthen their defense, bringing in Bayern Munich duo Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.

Former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel previously suggested that Onana’s errors were a result of not handling the pressure well.

Now, ex-United keeper Anders Lindegaard has shared his thoughts after playing for the legends team against Celtic at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Lindegaard, who was with United from 2010 to 2015 and made 29 appearances while working closely with David de Gea, has highlighted what he believes is Onana’s biggest challenge.

Lindegaard commented, “Onana has bounced back from a tough start and is performing much better now. However, there’s no secret formula for dealing with the pressure—that’s just part of the job. If you can’t handle it, or refuse to, then this job isn’t for you.”

These remarks follow criticism from another former United goalkeeper, Tim Howard, who questioned Onana’s intention to take more risks this season.

Howard told NBC Sports, “He can’t afford to make too many mistakes. Some of the goals he conceded were very saveable.

While the idea of taking more risks might be intriguing, I wasn’t convinced last year, and he still has a lot to prove. He has great talent, but he hasn’t fully shown it yet, and too many goals are getting through that should be saved.”

Schmeichel believes that Onana has been unlucky not to have a consistent defense in front of him at Manchester United. Last season, Erik ten Hag had to cope with injuries to key defenders like Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Raphael Varane, and Harry Maguire, which disrupted the team’s stability.

With De Ligt, Martinez, and Maguire now fit, there should be more consistency this season. Schmeichel recently commented, “I noticed significant improvements in various aspects of his game over the season.

Like any goalkeeper, he needs a solid defense in front of him. If he has that, I’m confident we’ll see a world-class, top-quality goalkeeper who will perform well.”
