“We have heard your cries and we are definitely going to Abolish the VAR” This is according to FIFA president as he confirms that Premier League is to 𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐩 𝐕𝐀𝐑 as clubs made their intentions clear by to holding a vote against it this evening

Wolves have formally submitted a proposal to the Premier League to initiate a vote at the league’s Annual General Meeting in June, aiming to abolish VAR from the commencement of the 2024/25 season.

 

The implementation of VAR in 2019/20 was initially made with good intentions, seeking to benefit football and the Premier League.

However, it has resulted in several unintended adverse effects that are detrimental to the connection between fans and football, as well as undermining the integrity of the Premier League brand. These include:

 

Impact on the joy of goal celebrations and the spontaneous emotion that makes football unique.

Frustration and confusion among fans in stadiums due to lengthy VAR reviews and insufficient communication. 

A more hostile environment with protests, booing of the Premier League anthem, and chants against VAR.

Expansion of VAR’s original scope from rectifying clear and obvious mistakes to scrutinizing subjective decisions excessively, thus compromising the fluidity and integrity of the game.

Reduced accountability of on-field officials, as VAR serves as a safety net, resulting in a loss of authority on the pitch.

Persistent errors despite VAR, leading to a lack of acceptance of human error among supporters even after multiple replays, thus damaging confidence in officiating standards.

Disruption of the fast pace of the Premier League matches due to prolonged VAR reviews and increased stoppage time, resulting in excessively long games.

Ongoing discussions about VAR decisions often overshadowing the matches themselves, tarnishing the league’s reputation.

Deterioration of trust and reputation, with VAR fueling baseless allegations of corruption.

 

The decision to present this proposal was made after careful consideration and with deep respect for the Premier League, Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), and fellow competitors.

 

No blame is assigned; all parties are seeking the best outcome for football.

All stakeholders have worked diligently to make the introduction of additional technology successful. However, after five seasons of VAR in the Premier League, it is time for a constructive and critical dialogue regarding its future.

 

Our stance is that the drawbacks we are experiencing in exchange for a marginal increase in accuracy are contrary to the essence of our sport. Therefore, we advocate for the removal of VAR starting from the 2024/25 season onward.
