Manchester United attracted attention in a recent development by recruiting Omar Barrada, who formerly served as Manchester City’s chief operating officer, to now serve as their chief executive officer.

Pep Guardiola has addressed this situation for the first time. Barrada, having spent over a decade at the Etihad Stadium, played a significant role in overseeing notable signings in recent years.

He will be taking over from Richard Arnold at Old Trafford following the recent vacancy in that position. This appointment marks one of the initial moves orchestrated by Sir Jim Ratcliffe since assuming control of football operations at United.

Given his significant role at City, joining their arch-rivals is seen as a substantial setback for the club. Guardiola has now been questioned about this development for the first time.

Expressing his doubts about Barrada’s potential to transform United, Guardiola offered an honest assessment during a recent press conference.

The Catalan coach questioned whether appointing a CEO would be sufficient to reverse the fortunes of the Red Devils after more than a decade of challenges.

Guardiola highlighted that City still retains talents like Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland, assets that won’t be at Old Trafford, making it challenging to replicate his success with the Citizens.

“Kevin De Bruyne is still at Man City, Erling Haaland will play here too. I’m not sure it’s that easy. But if United thinks with this person everything is going to change, congratulations! I don’t know what is going to happen. Lovely person, incredible character, incredible professional.

Yesterday I saw him, we hugged each other, and we wish him all the best. Deeply, I wish him all the best because he’s a fantastic person, what can I say?”

Acknowledging the magnitude of the task at the Red Devils, Pep believes Barrada will face challenges at Old Trafford.

However, if he manages to turn things around, Guardiola suggests he would deserve a stand named after him at the iconic stadium.

“I don’t know. If everything is going to be sorted and works, if it happens, oh my god, they have to make a new stand for Omar Barrada in the future if it does happen.”

To gauge the extent of Omar Barrada’s impact on Manchester City’s operations, you need only look back to the summer of 2022 when, in his capacity as COO, he orchestrated the transfer of Erling Haaland to the Etihad.

At that time, the Norwegian striker was among the most coveted players globally, and it was City who successfully secured his signature, with Barrada playing a pivotal role in the acquisition. However, Haaland was not the only high-profile player he successfully signed during that period.

He significantly contributed across the entire City Football Group over the past few years, going beyond Manchester and assisting in operations at other clubs within the group, including Girona.

There’s no denying that this appointment by United is an exceptional one, marking a highly promising start to the Ratcliffe era at Old Trafford.
