Pope, aged 31, suffered a dislocated shoulder during the Premier League match against Manchester United on Saturday night at St. James’ Park.
Expected to be sidelined for a duration ranging from four to five months, Newcastle’s primary goalkeeper is unlikely to make a return until at least the end of the current season.
In light of this situation and with Martin Dubravka and Loris Karius as the only available senior goalkeeping options, neither of whom is considered a regular starter, manager Eddie Howe has reportedly shifted his focus to 33-year-old David De Gea.
De Gea, who has been a free agent since the expiration of his contract at Old Trafford in the summer, is now open to negotiations with any club worldwide.
Newcastle, facing recent injury challenges, appears to be in a favorable position to secure the services of the former world-class goalkeeper.
