Chelsea’s situation with a key player will likely compel them to seek a new center-back in the transfer market in 2024.

Following yet another loss to Brentford, marking their third consecutive home defeat to the same opponent, setting a new Premier League record, Chelsea’s management must recognize the pressing need for new signings.

Despite the numerous arrivals and departures in recent transfer windows, ongoing changes seem detrimental to the club’s quest for stability.

In a club that requires consistency, it appears to be grappling with recurring issues.

Mauricio Pochettino’s appointment was expected to bring calmness to Stamford Bridge. While his influence is evident, the scale of the challenge might have surpassed initial expectations, as Chelsea continues to struggle, taking steps backward after any progress.

Trevoh Chalobah is not responsible for the club’s troubles, and he will depart Chelsea in 2024 due to injury, necessitating further adjustments in defense.

“I can confirm that Chelsea is actively exploring the signing of a new center-back for 2024. This decision is now 100% confirmed because the club is set to sell Trevoh Chalobah in the January transfer window,” stated Fabrizio Romano, a columnist at CaughtOffside, in his exclusive Daily Briefing.

“He would prefer to remain at Chelsea, as he desires more playing time, but there is no room for him, and he doesn’t want to be a benchwarmer. His injury aside, Chalobah’s future lies elsewhere.”

Securing a center-back of the required caliber and within budget may pose a challenge, although it is not unattainable. One player who could attract Mauricio Pochettino’s interest is Edmond Tapsoba from Bayer Leverkusen.

“Chelsea will assess potential opportunities in the January transfer window, contingent on finding the right player at the right price,” added Romano.

“Another player to keep an eye on is Edmond Tapsoba. He’s enjoying a remarkable season with Bayer Leverkusen. While he extended his contract in September, there remains a possibility of his departure in 2024 with a substantial offer.”

Whoever the club ultimately selects as the ideal candidate for the role must be prepared to make an immediate impact upon their appointment.

It’s understood that Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has expressed his support for Pochettino. However, a disappointing second half of the season could potentially lead to the withdrawal of that backing.

This is because any new signings will have received approval from the manager, as opposed to being acquired based on the whims of an owner who should possess better judgment.
